An application server is a\u00a0server<\/a>\u00a0program in a computer in a\u00a0distributed<\/a>\u00a0network<\/a>\u00a0that provides the business logic for an application program. The application server is frequently viewed as part of a three-tier application, consisting of a graphical user interface (GUI<\/a>) server, an application (business logic) server, and a\u00a0database<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0transaction<\/a>\u00a0server. More descriptively, it can be viewed as dividing an application into:<\/p>\n

  1. A first-tier,\u00a0front-end<\/a>, Web browser-based graphical user interface, usually at a personal computer or workstation<\/li>\n
  2. A middle-tier business logic application or set of applications, possibly on a\u00a0local area network<\/a>\u00a0or intranet server<\/li>\n
  3. A third-tier,\u00a0back-end<\/a>, database and transaction server, sometimes on a mainframe or large server<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Older,\u00a0legacy application<\/a>\u00a0databases and transaction management applications are part of the back end or third tier. The application server is the middleman between browser-based front-ends and back-end databases and legacy systems.<\/p>\n

    In many usages, the application server combines or works with a Web (Hypertext Transfer Protocol<\/a>) server and is called a\u00a0Web application server<\/i>. The Web browser supports an easy-to-create HTML-based front-end for the user. The Web server provides several different ways to forward a request to an application server and to forward back a modified or new Web page to the user. These approaches include the\u00a0Common Gateway Interface<\/a>\u00a0(CGI),\u00a0FastCGI<\/a>, Microsoft’s\u00a0Active Server Page<\/a>, and the\u00a0Java Server Page<\/a>. In some cases, the Web application servers also support request “brokering” interfaces such as\u00a0CORBA<\/a>\u00a0Internet Inter-ORB Protocol (IIOP<\/a>).<\/p>\n<\/section>\n
