In the past, we have discussed how to upgrade ESXi via the\u00a0HP Onboard Administrator,\u00a0VMware Update Manager, and\u00a0ESXCLI.<\/p>\n<p>Today, we will walk through the ESXi upgrade process from HPE Integrated Lights-Out (iLO). If you are unfamiliar with iLO, it is HPE\u2019s lights out management flavor to manage servers remotely.<\/p>\n<h3>Install or Upgrade ESXi from HPE iLO<\/h3>\n<p>To begin, launch an iLO Remote Console Session.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1306 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.virtubytes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/HPE_ILO-300x226.gif\" alt=\"HPE iLO\" width=\"300\" height=\"226\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In this instance, the ESXi image resides locally. As this is the case, we will remotely mount the image via iLO to the server. To do so, click\u00a0<strong>Virtual Drives<\/strong>\u00a0and select\u00a0<strong>Image File<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1308\" src=\"http:\/\/www.virtubytes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/ILO_Drive_Mount.gif\" alt=\"iLO Drive Mount\" width=\"391\" height=\"227\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Locate the local ESXi ISO and select\u00a0<strong>Open<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1307\" src=\"http:\/\/www.virtubytes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/ILO_Drive_Location.gif\" alt=\"iLO Drive Location\" width=\"819\" height=\"584\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In order to boot from the image, we will reboot the server. Select the\u00a0<strong>Power Switch<\/strong>\u00a0menu item and click\u00a0<strong>Reset<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1310\" src=\"http:\/\/www.virtubytes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/ILO_Reboot.gif\" alt=\"iLO Reboot\" width=\"208\" height=\"143\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you are unfamiliar with the HP Power Switch options, here is a quick rundown.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Momentary Press\u2014Similar to pressing the physical power button. Depending on the OS configuration, this can initiate a graceful shutdown.<\/li>\n<li>Press and Hold\u2014Similar to holding the physical power button for 5 seconds and then releasing it.<\/li>\n<li>Reset\u2014Will force the server to warm-boot.<\/li>\n<li>Cold Boot\u2014 Similar to pulling the power from the server (immediately removes power).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After the host boots,\u00a0<strong>Continue<\/strong>\u00a0with the ESXi installation.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1301\" src=\"http:\/\/www.virtubytes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/ESXi_Install_65.gif\" alt=\"ESXi Install 6.5\" width=\"469\" height=\"185\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Press\u00a0<strong>F11<\/strong>\u00a0to accept the EULA.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1299\" src=\"http:\/\/www.virtubytes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/ESXi_EULA_65.gif\" alt=\"ESXi 6 EULA\" width=\"490\" height=\"301\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Select the\u00a0<strong>disk<\/strong>\u00a0to upgrade and press\u00a0<strong>Enter<\/strong>.
